Why my world looks colder after cataract surgery

IMG_6071.JPG

I NOTICE THAT OUT OF THE EYE WITH THE NEW LENS IN IT, THE WORLD SEEMS A LITTLE LESS WARM “More cool or bright?” COOL OR BRIGHT. NOW IS THAT BECAUSE MY PUPIL IS STILL OPEN? “Actually, because you’re comparing it to the right eye which is developing a mild cataract. A cataract is kind of an amber-colored filter. It’s more brownish as you get older. So your brain has been adjusting to that slightly yellowy color over the years and interpreting that as white. Now we suddenly take that amber filter away and your brain says, ‘Man, this is very bright and blue.” This is actually the correct color you’re seeing out of your left eye and your brain will adjust.” Amy E. Weber, Ophthalmologist, Wyndmoor, PA. Watch video interview here.

Artist Brooke Schmidt travels places

DO YOU KNOW WHAT PATCHES YOU HAVE ON YOUR BACKPACK? The first one I think I got in Arches National Monument, I was hiking. My grand mom hiked to Delicate Arch and she was in her seventies. Then we have a cabin in Canada that I go to. Just went to Black Canyon in the Gunnison in October. WHICH IS WHERE? Colorado. I grew up in Florida, camping there. And Rocky Mountain National Park, I was just there on my own. I went to Costa Rica a couple years ago and I really enjoyed the butterfly gardens in Monteverde. I went to Ecuador to visit my friend a couple years ago. We had flown out to California for a weekend and ended up going to the Humboldt redwoods, which are really beautiful. Gimmelwald is in Switzerland. It’s a lovely little town to visit. I’ve been there a few times backpacking and Cape Breton we went there on our honeymoon, whales and moose, it was awesome. Blue Ridge Parkway we just did a road trip down there with the dogs in my V70 Volvo station wagon, which is really fun. And Boundary Waters, which is up on the border of Minnesota. There’s no motors allowed so it’s just canoeing the lakes. It’s really beautiful. I guess I did that about ten years ago WOW. So that’s my collection. And there are some that I’ve bought and I’ve lost like when we were in Scotland. I don’t know what happened to that one. Brooke Schmidt. Watch video interview here.

The Box Sled

WHAT KIND OF TECHNIQUES ARE YOU USING WITH YOUR BOX? Jimmy Maurer: “We’re opening it up so we get inside it. You open it up- ” Skyler Jahn: “- so two people can fit inside” JM: “One person pushes it down and behind them is on a sled and if they start to slow down, he’ll just bump into them and the box will go farther.” Phillipe Atallah, left with Jimmy Maurer (hidden) and Skyler Jahn, Water Tower Recreation Center slope. Zookeeping in the winter at the Elmwood Park Zoo

cu sierra allen elmwood zoo - 2.jpg

ARE YOU THE RAPTOR KEEPER? "No, actually, there’s usually four keepers on duty here at the zoo. And those four keepers could be in any one area. We split the entire area up into four so I’m area three today so I have the ferrets, these guys, the prairie dogs the elk, the bison, the peccaries, the rhea and then in the building next to the rhea there’s two parrots that live inside for the winter." AND WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A KEEPR IN THE WINTER? "I like it because I’m not a summer person at all I’d rather wear ten layers of close and be warm than – in summertime you just can’t get cool. So I like it but if you ask my other keeper friends, they don’t like it." WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO? "In the wintertime, for all the exhibits, not everybody has automatic waters, so like today, that’s the water bowl from the red tailed hawk and vulture [showing frozen water disk] so you make sure they have water. Of course it’ll freeze again but at least they had it for a little bit. I cleaned up their dinner from last night, which was a rat, and the meatball, which was gone so the vulture ate all his meatball. There’s only a little bit left of the rat. The redtail hawk’s favorite part of the rat is the brain. Just as important as food and water, all the animals get enrichment and that is anything that you can put in their cage that will make them use their natural behaviors. So different food items that are different from their diet, scents like Old Spice or Aqua Velva, herbs and spices, puzzle feeders." YOU PUT THE SCENTS ON WHAT? "Depending on the animal, you can put it on their toys, put it on exhibit furniture. You can spray your shoes and walk around." AND HOW WILL THEY REACT? "For instance the wolves like to roll in certain scents just like your dog would if it found something cool in the backyard and wants to advertise or mask it’s own scent. The wolves also like to urinate on scents that they find, too.” Sierra Allen, animal keeper Elmwood Park Zoo, Norristown. Watch video here.

The winter is not fun, especially when it snows.YOU GOT TO BE SKILLED TO DO THIS. Well after a while you get a little knack to it. It’s all wrist and elbow, on the wrist, repetitive motion injuries. You’re doing this every day, you’re flipping and it’s all elbow and wrist so after a while you get sore. My shoulders hurt mostly when the papers are particularly heavy. The black Friday paper, Thanksgiving Day paper, the thing probably weighs about five pounds and everybody gets one.. . ARE YOU THE GUY THAT THREW THE NEWSPAPER THROUGH MY NEIGHBOR’S DOOR? ‘Yep, that was me. WHAT HAPPENED? I think it was a Saturday or Sunday paper and I was trying to get it up on that little landing and it just kept going and knocked the pane of glass out and I can fix that, it would cost me maybe $30, She called the people that come out and fix your glass, it was $250.WAS THAT ON YOU? Oh yeah. Edward Jones, newspaper deliveryman. Watch full video here.
